Applications of dry ice
Dry ice has many applications. Dry ice has a cooling effect. A prominent application of dry ice is the cooling and preservation of temperature-sensitive goods. Whether it's fresh food, medical samples, pharmaceuticals, or biological materials, dry ice ensures these goods remain at the optimal temperature during shipping. The low temperature and the sublimation process make it a reliable choice for maintaining the quality and safety of your product.
Dry ice is also often used in the hospitality and event sectors to create fog and smoke effects. Whether on stage, in a film set, or during special events, the thick white fog that forms when it comes into contact with the surrounding air adds an extra dimension to the atmosphere. A spectacular show effect that completes your party.
If you're looking for a reliable cooling solution, an impressive visual effect, or a safe and environmentally friendly cleaning method, dry ice offers the perfect solution. Want to know if dry ice is the best option for your situation? Contact us for advice.
Questions about dry ice?
Is dry ice safe?
If you use dry ice as intended, it's safe. The basic rules are as follows:
- Wear gloves. Direct contact with skin will cause burns.
- Store dry ice in ventilated areas.
- Never store dry ice in an airtight container.
Dry ice is not suitable for children. Always supervise. Do not allow children to crawl on the floor, as CO2 sinks to the ground.
Dry ice is not a toy. It can be dangerous if used incorrectly.
- Do not add dry ice to drinks unless in a suitable secure container such as the IceBubbler.
If you're transporting dry ice by car, make sure the car is well-ventilated. Check that the air circulation mode isn't activated, and keep in mind that excessively high CO2 levels can be harmful. Always transport it in the trunk.
How long can I store dry ice?
It depends on many circumstances, 10kg can be used up in minutes when put in hot water for big smoke effects. But when used for smaller more subtle smoke effects you can work with it for 2 hours.
We ship the dry ice in sturdy polystyrene boxes in which the dry ice remains in good quality for between 3 and 5 days, depending on where it is stored. The best way is to place the sealed packaging in the freezer. At room temperature, 10% to 15% of the dry ice evaporates per day. The colder you store it, the less it evaporates per day.
How much dry ice do I need?
For small presentations, subtle effects or for a single scene in a play, our 10kg packaging is ideal. For large effects or long-lasting fog, we recommend the 25kg packaging.
What is the best way to store dry ice?
It's best to store dry ice in an insulated location. The better the insulation, the slower the dry ice sublimates. The box we supply the dry ice in is ideal for storage. Dry ice evaporates quickly and therefore has a short shelf life. Our packaging is specially designed to allow the dry ice to "breathe." This way, the dry ice stays fresh longer, despite its original short shelf life.
Never store dry ice in an airtight or glass container. Sublimation of dry ice causes pressure to build up if the container is airtight. In its gaseous state, CO2 takes up up to 800 times more space.
CO2 is heavier than air and will therefore sink to the ground. An elevated CO2 concentration in the air is dangerous (asphyxiating), so it's important not to store dry ice in closed spaces such as basements, the hull of a boat, or a walk-in refrigerator. The danger arises, for example, when dry ice is stored regularly; the CO2 concentration will slowly but surely increase without you noticing. (It is possible to store your dry ice, including the box, in a regular refrigerator/freezer at home; in that case, place the dry ice, packaging and all, in the freezer. Because the freezer will be opened regularly, the CO2 content will naturally decrease, and there is no danger.)
Some materials can be damaged by direct contact with dry ice. Adhesives and sealants become brittle and fragile. Be careful when using this product in the kitchen.
